Pluto in Aquarius | 2023 - 2044
Generational planet Pluto is in Aquarius for over 20 years, roughly 10 of which (on and off) are ‘out of bounds’. Pluto is the planet of transformation, destruction and rebirth. Read all about the energy and function of Pluto in Aquarius.
Energy and function of Pluto
In our book Your Being we described how Pluto brings your inner and outer worlds together, making them one. That is the underlying purpose of its transformative power. Destruction of what is not right for you, creating space for growth and development.
With focus and tremendous willpower, Pluto helps us to get to know our own inner world and bring our lives in the physical dimension into alignment with it. It is therefore associated with trauma and survival mechanisms. In our book Your Karma we described that unhealthy survival mechanisms create blockages and obstacles. They prevent you from looking at the situation with an open mind, from getting over things, and from learning. Yet these are precisely the things you need in order to grow and reach a higher frequency in your life plan. Pluto helps you with this, using brute force if necessary.
Pluto in Aquarius 2023 - 2044
Aquarius represents autonomy, independence, and freedom. It is humanitarian, serves the group, and sees everyone as equals. It wants to improve the common good, dislikes “the way things are,” and challenges the status quo. Aquarius is about community and power to the people. It is also associated with science, technology, and innovation.
Pluto entered Aquarius for the first time on March 23, 2023. On July 11, it returned to Capricorn, on January 20, 2024, it re-entered Aquarius, and on September 1, it returned to Capricorn, before moving completely into Aquarius on November 19, where it will remain for more than 20 years. This transition of Pluto was the final phase of the transition of energy and the beginning of the Aquarius age.
Pluto Out of Bounds
During this period, Pluto is ‘out of bounds’ for around 10 years (on and off). This means that Pluto moves outside its normal zone, more than 23°27′ north or south of the celestial equator. The energy of an out of bounds planet is often out of control. This means that Pluto can express its transformative power in an unconventional, intense or boundless way.
The last time Pluto was out of bounds was between 1938 and 1953, with the greatest deviation occurring between 1945 and 1946, reaching 24°06′ north. In the period 2025–2035, the deviation will be to the south, peaking in the years 2029 to 2031, when the deviation will reach -23°47.
Pluto out of bounds to the north manifests itself mainly in extreme top-down abuse of power. Pluto out of bounds to the south (which is what we have now) is more bottom-up, going against abuse of power. This is further reinforced by the energy of Aquarius.
Radical Changes
To find out what Pluto in Aquarius means for you personally, look at which area of life (house) Aquarius is in, whether you have planets there, or opposite, square or in other angles that form aspects with it. There are numerous websites with a tool that provides a visual representation of your natal chart based on your date, time and place of birth. The numbers in the inner circle are the houses (1 to 12).
Initial Energy: Renewal of Values
When Pluto first entered Aquarius on March 23, 2023, the Sun, Mercury, Chiron, Jupiter, and the Moon were in Aries. Pluto formed a quincunx with the ruler of Aries, Mars, which was on the last degree (also called the critical degree) of Gemini. In addition, the North Node, Venus, and Uranus were in Taurus. Pluto also activated the point of the Saturn-Jupiter conjunction at 0 degrees Aquarius. Together, this provides the initial energy of Pluto in Aquarius, which can be compared to the first inhalation that creates your own unique programming.
This configuration indicates a strong impulse to break through old structures and embark on new, innovative paths. Which paths these will be depends on how we reevaluate what we consider valuable (North Lunar Node, Venus, and Uranus in Taurus) in relation to freedom, independence, and autonomy (Aquarius and Saturn – Jupiter cycle). The quincunx between Pluto and Mars indicates challenges in how we discuss and process these changes. A gap may arise between the profound transformations that are taking place and the way we communicate them.
A remarkable detail of synchronicity is that Neptune and Saturn will be in Aries in the coming years, and Uranus will be in Gemini. When they change signs, all four planets will form harmonious aspects (trine and sextile) with each other. This will reinforce and prolong the initial energy of Pluto in Aquarius.
Pluto and Neptune: Spiritual Transformation
Pluto forms a sextile with Neptune in AriesThis is part of the 495-year cycle that began in 1891-1892 with the conjunction (alignment) of Pluto and Neptune. Because they are both slow, outer planets, their aspects mainly influence generations and society as a whole.
The sextile between Pluto and Neptune has been going on for decades and has been exact several times at long intervals: 1950-1965 (15x exact), 1976-1986 (21x exact) and now between 2026-2032 (13x exact). These are moments when the themes of this sextile are further developed and integrated.
The sextile that is exact 13 times between 2026 and 2032 offers a period in which the spiritual and idealistic energy of Neptune can harmoniously combine with the transformative power of Pluto. A special element during this period is that out of bounds Pluto aligns four times with an exact sextile between Pluto and Neptune.
All in all, this sextile combines spiritual growth with profound transformation, which can lead to social progress, technological innovations, and collective evolution. At the same time, Pluto's unpredictable energy requires vigilance against extremes, such as abuse of power or radical upheavals.
Pluto and Uranus Reinforce Each Other
Pluto forms a trine with Uranus in GeminiThis trine is part of a cycle lasting between 113 and 141 years, which began with the conjunction in Virgo in 1965-1966. Their transformative forces came together in Virgo to destroy what is no longer useful and to ensure that what remains becomes more practical and usable.
With this trine, the planets support each other in their work. Uranus is the ruler of Aquarius, which strengthens the energy. It concerns profound but relatively smooth changes in how we live and interact with each other, our consciousness, and how we think and communicate with each other.
This trine with Pluto is exact on:
- July 18, 2026
- November 29, 2026
- June 15, 2027
- January 13, 2028
- May 10, 2028
Pluto and Saturn: Restructuring
Pluto and Saturn have a cycle that lasts between 33 and 38 years from conjunction to conjunction. This cycle began in January 2020 in Capricorn. Saturn, Pluto, the Sun, and Mercury were in conjunction at that time. Key themes of this cycle are power and leadership, breaking down and re-building, and restrictions and boundaries. What is your definition of success and do you set boundaries in order to be successful?
Since the conjunction was in Capricorn, this will be most evident in careers, ambitions, and success. Globally, this will likely be seen in governments, banks, and large (tech) companies.
World history shows that under the influence of Saturn and Pluto existing structures and social relations are overthrown:
- Outbreak of World War I in 1914/1915 (Saturn conjunct Pluto)
- Outbreak of World War II 1939/1940 (Saturn square Pluto)
- Recession of 1982 (Saturn conjunct Pluto)
- 9/11 attacks in 2001 (Saturn opposite Pluto)
- Start of COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019/early 2020 (start of current cycle: Saturn conjunct Pluto)
As soon as Saturn enters Aries, it forms a sextile with Pluto. This sextile is exact on March 28, 2026. It is a moment when the planets harmoniously reinforce each other from their current positions. It is a period in which we can develop initiatives with discipline and a long-term vision that contribute to transformation and restructuring around the core themes.
In 2028-2029, this conjunction will be at its opening square. Saturn will then be in Taurus. The question here is: ‘How far have we come since the starting point?’. In 2035-2036, the opposition will occur, with Saturn in Leo. By then, we will begin to get a good picture of how this cycle of Pluto and Saturn shapes our lives.
Pluto and Jupiter: Shortages or Abundance
Pluto and Jupiter have a 13-year cycle. This cycle began on April 5, 2020, in Capricorn. The core themes of this cycle are uncovering hidden truths in belief systems, philosophies, and convictions, transforming power, structure, and authority, and living from shortage or abundance. Capricorn is about frugality, obedience, and everything for a small group (top down), while Jupiter helps you learn to live from abundance by giving insight into the intelligence that Mother Earth possesses.
On July 20, 2026, they will form an opposition. Jupiter will then be in the sign of Leo. During this period, we will get a good idea of the effects of this cycle. In February 2033, they will be conjunct again. This will mark the start of the cycle in Aquarius, which will bring completely different core themes to work with.
