Setting boundaries starts before you say no

You said yes while feeling no. You went along while something inside you pulled back. You considered the other person but lost touch with yourself. And afterwards, you think: Why did I do this (again)?

This is because boundaries don't just arise in a conversation. They begin earlier. In your energy, your attunement, what you pick up from the other person, and in how quickly you abandon yourself to maintain the connection.

Your boundary isn't just in what you say

During contact with others, an continuous exchange of energy takes place. You feel what someone needs and you attune yourself to the atmosphere. That is not wrong in itself. But if you don't clearly feel what is yours and what belongs to the other person, you will unconsciously start to go along with them.

Then you adjust before you make a choice. You say yes while your system actually feels no. You take on energy or responsibility that isn't yours. And that's exactly where you cross your boundary. Not because you don't have boundaries. But because you don't feel them in time.

When you don't set your own boundaries,
Nor can another respect it.

You are there for the other person by being present with attention, not by taking the other person's energy.

How to tell if you're over your energetic limit

You can recognize this by:

  • You feel tired after contact with someone.
  • You say yes and later feel irritation or emptiness
  • You don't quite know what you want when someone asks you for something.
  • you feel tension in your body, but you go along anyway
  • You adjust your tone, opinion, or energy to avoid trouble.
  • You feel responsible for how the other person reacts.
  • You need time afterwards to recover.

That's why just ‘saying no better’ often doesn't work

Much advice on boundaries is about behavior:

  • communicate more clearly
  • say no more often
  • Stand up for yourself

Sometimes that's also the case. But often that's not the only factor. If you are energetically ‘open’ and resonate with your environment, then you are already influenced before you react. Then you are already going along with it before you say anything, and your “no” often comes too late. It doesn't start with what you say, but with what happens in your system.

What is needed to feel your limit sooner

Feeling your limits begins with returning to your own energy. This means learning to recognize:

  • where your energy stops and that of the other begins
  • when you take something that doesn't belong to you
  • when you adapt yourself to avoid tension
  • how to get back to yourself before you react

From that clarity, setting boundaries comes more naturally.

Setting boundaries is not about shutting yourself off or building a wall around yourself. It's about learning to distinguish what is yours and what isn't, and consciously making choices instead of unconsciously going along with things. This allows you to stay true to yourself, even when interacting with others.

You have more control over your life than you often realize
